Torremolinos

Torremolino's origins can be traced back to 1489 when the name "Molinos de la Torre" was firstly recorded. Later, in 1745 a cartographer inscribedfor the first time on a map the village Torre de los Molinos. Firstly developed as a fishing centre, Torremolinos quickly established itself as one of the first and best known holiday destination thanks to its miles of sandy beaches, convenient location close to Malaga airport, and the amazing climate of the Costa del Sol.


Torremolinos has a considerable number of parks:

The new Parque Bateria (Battery Park). Consisting of approx. 75,000 sqm of landscaped gardens, the park includes a boating lake, a few childrens' play areas, pathways, bicycle & running tracks, as well as several impressive fountains. The most popular feature in the Park is the "Torre Mirador", a 15,4 metre high marble tower which can be scaled via a spiral staircase.


"Los Manantiales Botanic Gardens" are situated just on the outskirts of Torremolinos. This 41,000 m2 garden is situated on the site of El Molino de Inca, one of the oldest of the famous water mills from which the town derives its name.

A a market town in Roman times whose name was Lacibis, Coín provided the marble from the quarries of the Sierra Blanca which were used to built the Roman city of Italica which once stood close to Seville and was and was the birthplace in 76AD of the future emperor, Hadrian.

San Pedro de Alcántara is about 10 minutes drive west from Marbella along the A7 motorway towards Gibraltar. Once an ancient farming community, San Pedro is a nice touristic village with a character of his own. The central plaza has a nice parish church, cafes and bars.
Of particular interest are also the Paleochristian Balisilica Church by the sea and the third century Roman Baths colled "Las Bovedas".
The city's fair takes place in the second week in October each year.

The town Ronda is one of the most popular destinations in Andalucia. The town, 45 miles away from Marbella stands on a towering plateau, which is divided in two by a plunging river gorge known as El Tajo.

El Tajo is spanned by a bridge called the Puente Nuevo which was built in the eighteenth century and provides access to both sides of Ronda.

On one side of the bridge is the old Moorish town with many historic buildings including the House of the Moorish King. In the other side of the town, called the "new town", the oldest Bull Ring in Spain is worth a visit.

Mijas was part of Turdetania, and there are still some remains from that era located in the present of its town wall. Its rich mines were worked by Phoenicians and Greeks, and the ores set to the Far East in small ships.
The city was called Tamisa by the Romans, and it was an important commercial centre close to the via Appìa linking Malaga and Cadiz. The city was occupied by Arabs for many centuries, until its reconquest by the Christian Monarch in 1492.
The city belonged to the kingdom of Ben Hafsun until it was reconquered by Abderraman III .Mijas fight bravely against the conquest by the catholic armies, by after the subdue of Malaga to the Catholic Monarchs, Mijas surrender itself to the Monarchs.
During the war between the Communities, Mijas remained faithful to the Emperor, for that reason, the queen Doña Juana, as per Royal Mandat on the 2nd. January 1521, confered the town the title of Villa.

Ojen

Ojén, is a very typical town very near Marbella at about 8kms inland, characterised by narrow streets and whitewashed façades houses. Although there is not exact information about the town earlier settlement. it is believed to have Arab origins and dated back to the epoch of Abderraman III, who fight against Omar Ben Hafsun, - Arab lider who uprose against the caliphate -, in the castle of Ojen (Hoxen), which was burnt down together with the rest of the village during the Moorish uprising in 1569.

The festivities in Ojen take place between 9th and 12th, October to commemorate its Saint Patron San Dionisio. Several are the events organised throughout the year, as the famous flamenco festival, around the first week of August or the "Romeria"on 12th May.
